back to Letters from God As a minister, I am keyed into the shifting tides of what in the world does God want from me now? I'm trained as a counselor: who needs me right now? I am an inspirational speaker; who is my current audience this moment? I am a freelance writer: who do I need to communicate to? And so on. This new assignment was born in the wee hours of the morning, one late summer day. I was awakened from a dead sleep with the words “Letters from God dropt in the streets…” They were intoned inside my mind by a musical, soft, male voice. In my sleepy, startled state, I murmured, “Yea, I know…um, it's a line from Walt Whitman's Song of Myself right?” To which there was a reply of absolute silence. I went back to sleep. But the words, letters from God dropt in the streets , stayed with me as I went about my next few days. Over and over again, they would haunt me, and I wondered what it all meant. Then finally, an idea broke through the surface of my consciousness: It's a book! It had to be. I thought, “May be it'll be a book about God that would be inspired through me and….” But not all of the above felt quite right. The book part seemed correct, and the rest I threw right back at God…or whoever was playing with my mind. Finally, about three weeks after the initial words woke me up; I received what could only be described as a Full Download. My assignment: I am to ask the world the following question: “Have you had an encounter with, or a communication from God? Tell me your story.” I am to then collect the stories, edit them, and knit them together as a book series. It's a daunting task, yet why not do something that seems daunting? Why not put God back into our daily conversation — the everyday God, the God of the People? As you go through your everyday journeys, pause a moment…stand in gratitude for the opportunity to express yourself freely. Be grateful for those who surround you, those who love you, those who challenge you. And then take a moment to see what your God has to say to you.Let me know what you hear. back to Letters from God
